Encouragement

Kiwican says all aboard the leader ship.

"A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way and shows the way,"
Playing the game "Seven".

We had to count to 7, using our legs. When we said "7", we lost that leg. We kept going around the circle until everybody was "out".

We talked about what it means to encourage someone. If someone doesn't want to do something, then you can encourage them with your words to keep trying.

We worked together as a team, on our activity, which we did last year too. We had to step on the right cones in the right order to make our way through the mine field. We had to watch the person in front of us carefully to remember where to go.
Minefield Game

It was great to hear such positive encouragement in the comments being made around the room. The high fives were a nice touch too!

We have come such a long way in the values that we show at KiwiCan. Today, we were being there by paying attention, encouraging each other and making the most of every opportunity. It paid off... we earned full points (20/20) plus a bonus point from Owen! No-one has ever had a bonus point before.

Life skills

We were lucky enough to have Nigel revisit us and teach us some more life skills.

We were practicing self control, remembering that we can't control what other people do but we can control what we do and how we react to it.

Kyle loves MMA

Kyle has been patiently waiting for the last few days to share this story with us. Stuff came to his MMA class and filmed it the other week.
Children as young as 5 are taking up mixed martial arts classes in Christchurch.
Every one was really excited to watch the short video clip about it and see what happens there. He's only been doing it a few short weeks but really enjoys it!

Kiwican

We're learning about Positive Relationships. Today we're talking about opinions, and how to talk about our opinions and our beliefs. It's okay to disagree with other people. It doesn't mean that we can't be friends.

"Kiwican says all aboard the leader ship!"

We played 'Pass the Pulse'.
Pass the Pulse game
Owen squeezed someone's hand and then it was passed down the line to the end... to try and get Cando Kiwi first!
The boys won easily!

We had a wee debate.

Topics included:
"video games are the best/worst thing ever".
"Children should/shouldn't help with chores".
"McDonalds is the best/worst food ever."

Teams had 5 minutes to come up with what they wanted to say.

Its pink shirt day today, to celebrate anti-bullying!
We had some stars go the extra mile to get the message out there.

Only one way to find an answer to our question.

This morning there was a bit of discussion and debate about whether people want to do big jumps in actual BMX races. Dylan thought that they did. Rory and Ms Raisin said definitely not. For my writing, I wrote a letter to Sarah Walker, because she should know, right? Ms Raisin copied my letter into a message to Sarah Walker. Now I just have to wait for a reply...

To Sarah Walker

Is it true that if you do a jump in a bmx race you slow down and lose the race. I personally think that when you get some speed from the starting ramp, you just don’t do a high jump but a long one. One that makes you fly over all the others, like through them in a space and win the race. Me and my teacher want a straight answer.

My teacher says that the more air you get, the more slower you go. (She was a BMX racer in the olden days).

Positive Relationships

We have a good chance at being the winning class this term, after getting full points last week.

Kiwican says playing fair is what we do, taking turns for me and you.

We're talking about how to follow rules and take turns.

For our energiser, we had to listen to the call... if it was "river" we were on the right of the line. If it was "bank", we jumped on the left of the line.
We needed to show integrity if we moved. To make it tricky, we then had to say the opposite command.

We talked about rules in different sports & the reason we have them.

We linked to rules at school and home.  We then talked about bedtimes and how much sleep we need to get a good night sleep... that's why we have a bedtime.

For our activity, we had to come up with an energiser that we could lead later in the term. It needs to have:
1. A name for our energiser
2. Rules
3. instructions

We needed to talk about our ideas before we put anything on paper. There were lots of ideas flying around the circle, but in the end we had to mesh our ideas together.

Celebrating Star Wars Day

We've been having fun with Star Wars Day, by having a go at the Star Wars Hour of Code.

We learned to write the script to create the games... then we made our own games. You can check them out on some of our blogs.

No Blog Comments

Some of our fabulous Te Ropu Manawaroa learners haven't had any comments on their blog posts!

If you have the time, could you please go in and comment!

Positive Relationships

We are learning about positive relationships. We recapped about what positive means (& it's opposite... negative!)
Relationships are how we get along with others... it can be with our friends, class mates, teachers, family members, sports coaches...

"KiwiCan says...playing fair is what we do,
Taking turns for me and you."

We played "The Blob".
We had to spread out and try to tag people to make them join in our blob. The blob would corner people to capture them! Judging by the smiles, everyone had loads of fun playing the game! Owens ferocious roar was quite frightening!

We had a big discussion around fairness and fair play, as well as getting people involved in the game. We shared how we might feel if we weren't being involved in the game. There are times when we don't want to join in because we think we can't do it, but when we give it a go we find out it's actually really fun!

For our activity, we were in four groups and we were given cards that had something that we had to make with our bodies. Everyone had to be included and participate.
Clockwise, from top left: Bus stop, Car, Bicycle & Tree.
What a fantastic fun filled start to KiwiCan for term 2!!!

Good morning Miss J

As a very special treat, we spoke to Miss J this morning. It was 4:30am in China, where she was waiting for her connecting flight to Japan.

Celebration Assembly Art

We have been learning about the meaning of our home base name. Manawaroa means perseverance and resilience.
We created artwork to show how we persevere.
