Gilberthorpe goes skiing

We were fortunate to take a group of students, teachers and whanau up to Mount Hutt for the day.

We arrived at school before 7am, ready to load into cars for the trek. There was much excitement! - From our littlest 5 year olds, to our parents and teachers! It was quite dreary weather during the drive, but as we headed up the access road, we drove up through the clouds and found ourselves with clear skies up above.

We had the option of skiing or snowboarding. It was pretty tricky getting the ski boots on for those of us who weren't used to wedging our feet in. We headed straight into our lessons with the fabulous Mt Hutt Instructors.

    1. Hi Charlie, The weather was absolutely fabulous, as seen in the photo's. It was pretty murky until we rose up above the clouds on the drive up the mountain.

  4. Hi my name is Breanna from Karoro School, I really like how you went skiing, it is so much fun. It made me think of the first time I went skiing. I wasn't doing any turns so I was flying down the mountain then I hit a lump of snow and forwards rolled once down the mountain and slammed my skis in some ice and laughed even though it hurt so bad.

    1. Hi Breanna, Your first time skiing sounds just like my first time skiing, way back when I went to Greymouth Junior High School! I headed straight down the hill, waving to my friends in the group at the bottom... and then plowed right through them because I didn't know how to stop! I don't remember whether it hurt but I'm sure it did... probably mortifyingly embarrassing as well!

    1. Hi Alaska, Hopefully some of our students have gone into more detail on their individual blogs. It was a lot of fun (and very tricky!) Last year, I tried snowboarding for the first time. That was very tricky!!! It was nice to be skiing and experiencing a bit more success!
