Planting Day

Korokia tree - it will come out in yellow flowers and red berries. (You can eat them, but they're not tasty like other berries we eat.)

We needed to tease out the roots out so that they would grow to spread out rather than bound up.

After placing it in the hole, Cayden held the tree while others filled soil into the hole. 

Next we "firm" the soil, by standing on it and "firming" it. 

We'll need to water it weekly. 

Apparently, trees don't like rock music... it's actually been studied!

KiwiCan Week 8

In Kiwican this term, we are trying to earn kiwi's which have skills and values on them. 

KiwiCan says if I got a problem

Our warm up involved us walking around silently for 30 seconds... we had to come and sit down when we thought it was 30 seconds. We were between 20 & 37 seconds. 

Then we tried to guess 1 minute. Hridayman was counting... but got the timing a little out throughout. Some of the challenges were losing count or distracted by other people counting out loud instead of in their head. 

Last round was 2 minutes. 

The last people were at 2 minutes 25 seconds. It required a lot of problem-solving. 

Our big topic is resilience, with our smaller topic being problem-solving. 

We played Boggle. There were 9 letters on the board and we had to try and spell words with it. We could only use each letter once. 

Some of the things that were challenging was communication, listening to each others ideas, spelling the words, finding words with hard letters.

We started off our session with a game of "Giant Wizard Dwarf". It's like a larger than life game of 'Rock Scissors Paper', except instead of individuals doing hand signals, we had to work as a team and do a full body action together.

It was really impressive how well everyone talked and came to a decision. 

We then played a game of 'Splash'. If Tia pointed to you, you had to bob down and the people either side had to turn to each other and say "splash". The first person to say it stays in, while the last to say it is out. If it's not your turn to say "splash", you are also out. 

The best part was the "Moo off" to find the winner at the end!

Resilience means never giving up. We showed resilience in our games by going out with a good attitude and waiting patiently for a new round to begin. 

KiwiCan is back

Welcome back to KiwiCan!We have Owen back, joined by Tia and Connor.

We are learning about Respect and how we can show respect to other people.

KiwiCan says...

Our energiser had us working together to make a:

It was really hard when we had one extra person and someone had to sit out. We had to show respect while working it out to solve the problem. 

We talked about what a treaty is and the kind of things we might need to include.

We are learning about Respect for our community.

We talked about what a community is and places in our community.

Kiwican says "Respect for you, Respect for me, Respect for our community."

Our energiser was the Rock Scissors paper game we learned the other day... with a twist. If we lost we had to join as a snake to become a community. 

We talked about places in our community: the hub, shops, nana's, the swimming pool, the library, sports clubs, beach, the park, the hospital, the police, school, dairy. 

There are all these different places in our community, we talked about ways we should act when we are out in the community, like not yelling or running in the library. 

We had to come up with 2-3 ways that we would behave at each station.

Welcome back to Kiwi Can

We are learning about Respect this term. We have new leaders! Owen, who came last year for a few sessions, is joined by Katie.

Owen and Katie teaching us the new catchphrase.

We played a suped up game of Paper Scissors Rock'. If we lost, we had to go down on our knees. People on feet competed against each other... and people on their knees competed. If you lost again, you went to your bottom. You could be freed by answering a question from Owen, Katie or Ms Raisin.

Our focus is on Respect for our school. 

"I show respect for my school, because it is really cool."

We worked together to come up with what respect means to us. There were loads a fantastic ideas. 

Stop look and listen.

Being kind... all the time.

Look after the school and property.

Respect our land, equipment and family.
