Life education

Why is having a growth mindset important?
How can we show resilience?

We need a really strong Te Whare Tapa Wha to have good overall well-being.
We remembered the 4 pillars that make our house (our Houora) strong.

Taha Hinengaro

Neuroplasticity - you're brain is able to be trained. You can learn new things and make new connections.

KiwiCan

We are learning about positive relationships. part of that is Positive Communication. Today in Kiwi Can we are talking about using our manners to suit the situation.
KiwiCan says communication say the word,
Use your words so you can be heard.
No need to argue, listen and see,
Clear understanding is the key!

Today we were lucky to be able to head into our new teaching space for our KiwiCan lesson. This was the first time we got to go inside to have a look.

For our energiser, we had to use positive communication to keep balloons in the air. When we hit it once, we had to touch a wall before we hit it again. We needed to not let them hit the ground.
We had an activity where we had to choose a greeting (wave, bow, or handshake) that is most appropriate for the situation.

First swim

We had our first class swim of the Summer.
The pool is a balmy 28 degrees, so it's warmer in the pool than out!

Day 2 Lockdown Learning

Today we had to get creative and build a snowman, even though it's like a beautiful Spring day out there!
Here's mine:

Team Work

KiwiCan says...I do my part
I am responsible
helping the team
overcome the obstacle.

Our first activity was to work together as a pair to act out a chore or task that we mingle do at home (e.g. doing the dishes, packing our school bag). We had to show teamwork by collaborating to act out the action in a way that our class could guess what it was.

Our next activity was to create a figure (monster or person) from a pipe cleaner. Once we had made our figure, we needed to draw it.

The challenge to the class was to look after their monster for the next week. They are going to present their monsters next week at KiwiCan.

Today's certificate went to Essence!

Smart Media choices

We are learning to make smart media choices. Ms Raisin is terrible at looking at her screen to check emails etc when she is on the move. She has walked into signs, lampposts and other people doing this! She gets really easily distracted! It's a wonder she hasn't been run over!

We played Twalkers which reminded us how distracting the screen can be.

Learning to be smart with images

We have been learning how to be smart with the images we post online

Animation 101

We have been learning how to make a basic animation in google slides.

Skate School

We were really lucky to have George from Skate School teaching us how to ride.

He brought two different types of boards. One for cruising and one for tricks. I really liked the cruise board.

It was really great to see everyone choosing a really positive attitude and giving it a go, even though it threw some of us out of our comfort zone.

Easter Baskets

For Easter, we made baskets on Google drawing.

We had to learn a few skills, like holding down the shift key to make sure the shape is a square. SOme of us found that if it wasn't a square, our basket was lop-sided.

We also needed to source images that we were able to use and how to make sure they were png images.

Anne and Veronica from the library visit

We were lucky enough to have a visit from Anne from the library van and Veronica from our local Hornby primary.
Ngakaunui joined us for this session.

Anne talked about the different types of books she brings, along with where we will find them in the van.
Younger fiction chapter books
Older fiction chapter books
Picture books
Non Fiction
Anne read us 'Wordy Birdy'. She had a fabulous expressive reading voice!

We're really excited to be going to the can to get some books out later today.

Recreating the Americ'S CUP

We have been exploring the tools from the America's Cup DLO.

Thomas created this on Co-Space:

Violet created this on Chrome Music Lab

Welcome back to KiwiCan

We're back to KiwiCan but not as we've known it... it's coming to us, instead of the hall (because we watched our hall get demolished last week!)

We're learning about Respect this term.

We recapped what Entering, Integrity, Compassion, Listening, and Respect look like.

Someone will get to pick a character to climb our points ladder.

KiwiCan says...
I have respect.
I also have pride.
These will effect,
those by my side.

We played the name game to help Steve and Connor know all our names. When someone said your name, they crossed the circle to stand in their place. That person then said someone else's name and crossed to their spot.

We came inside and came up with a treaty for KiwiCan.

Kiwican

We are focusing on positive relationships (whanaungatanga) this term at Kiwican.

We can argue,
To no end,
But that won't stop us
From being friends

We played a game where we had to choose a way to look. Owen would point in a direction and if we were facing the same way as he was pointing, we were "out". If we didn't move our head, we were also "out".

We had to be honest and show integrity. Sometimes we were too slow to move our heads which made us go "out".
We were practising being a leader by:
- going down when we were supposed to.
- leading ourselves and showing honesty.

We split into teams and played Scattergories. We get given a topic and then each need to say a different word for that topic. If there is a double-up then the person is out. Each person has 3 lives.

It was hard to remember which colours had been said after a while. Sometimes people were confused about what were colours or flavours. Many people confused vegetables with fruit.
We needed to show being a leader by showing self-control and not talking.

A Quick Dip

We hit the pool for the very first time this morning. It was a warm 28 degrees in there and a few of our learners made the most of it, while the rest looked on from the new tiered seating in envy.
The bees seem to like the warm water too!!

Kiwican

Kiwican says...
We play fair,
Because it's fun,
I'll shake your hand
If I've lost or won!

We learned to play Capture the Flag, (but with a rugby ball).

CSO

Peach, apple, rest,
We created a pattern...
We said the pattern. Then we clapped the pattern.

We split into groups (percussion numbers).
Reading through the sheet music and clapping the beat.
We are learning FOGUE for untuned percussion.

Hanging with Harold

We are learning about our brains with Life Education.

Today we learned about WHAM attacks. We had great examples of when we have them because we've all had them!

WHAM attack

Waiting
Hard
Angry
Mean
The Head Hustler takes your learning and your fun away from you. This sets on when we have a Fixed Mindset. He makes us think "just give up", "why try", "you're rubbish at this". He's not telling the truth... it's a wham attack stealing your learning from you.
The Mind Master is our growth mindset and helps us make a great choice.

GRIT

Give it your all.
Resolve your problems -communicate
You are important. Know your worth.
Be tenacious - don't give up.
Take the time to do it right -have pride in what you do.
Ignore the temptation to give up!
Redo if necessary - improve.

Planting Day

Korokia tree - it will come out in yellow flowers and red berries. (You can eat them, but they're not tasty like other berries we eat.)

We needed to tease out the roots out so that they would grow to spread out rather than bound up.
After placing it in the hole, Cayden held the tree while others filled soil into the hole.

Next we "firm" the soil, by standing on it and "firming" it.

We'll need to water it weekly.

Apparently, trees don't like rock music... it's actually been studied!

Kiwican

We are learning about Whanaungatanga, Positive Relationships. Especially Fairness and Fair Play.
Kiwi Can says...
We play fair,
Because it's fun,
I'll shake your hand
If I've lost or won!

Today we welcomed our new Kiwi Can leader Steve.

For our warm up, we played splash. If Owen pointed at us, we duck down and the people either side "splash" each other.
Finished off by our moo-off.

Play Day

We had our Play Day at school. We were lucky to have a star DJ in the midst of all the action... our very own James! Sadly the smoke machines cut the fun a little short by setting off the fire alarms. It turns out we're really good at clearing the buildings though. There were plenty of smiles on the field while we lined up ao it didn't ruin the fun!

Being a good role model

We recapped what it means to make good choices.

KiwiCan says...
we are role models,
through and through,
everything we say
and everything we do.

We played a game where we were put into 3 teams:
- good role models
- bad role models
- bystanders

Good role models are picking up rubbish (balls) and putting them in one bin.
- bad role models Are putting the rubbish in the other bin.
- bystanders need to make a choice about which side they are going to be on.
The group with the most "rubbish" wins.

We talked about what a bystander is like in real life. What a good role model would do or a bad role model would do in situations like a piece of rubbish on the ground.

We talked about how we can be role models for people older than us as well as younger.
